We’re coming to the end of a solemn observance of Lent and the Holy Week of the Christian Calendar. This is marked as a period of prayer, repentance, alms-giving and self-denial. This is meant to replicate the sacrifices of Jesus Christ for our sake. Regrettably, offering and sacrificing for the common good remains a far cry from the moral most painfully displayed by Jesus Christ.
As we observe the Holy Week and prepare to celebrate Easter, very many Ugandans have no food and some have starved to death; insecurity and violent crime is on the rise; those who criticise the powerful for injustices are kidnapped/ arrested and tortured; big land-grabs by the powerful in political/military leadership are causing landlessness to many; corruption and theft of public resources is at unprecedented levels etc.
This is on top of the perennial problems of poverty and unemployment, poor health care and education, lack of clean water, road carnage etc.
In spite of the excellent endowment of our country with resources, our people continue to leave on the margins and many in humiliating poverty.
At the core of these problems is the injustice of a small group of people forcibly controlling all power, institutions and resources of the country and applying them to benefit a chosen few at the expense of all others.
The moral of Jesus turning tables in the temple is most relevant now. Leaders of our people need to step forward and courageously guide the people to turn the tables and reclaim our country before it’s too late.
My colleagues and I, in the “People’s Government” are committed to doing everything in our power to empower our people to non-violently assert their will as the masters of this country, and to establish a free, just and equitable society.
Isaiah 40:29 “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength”!
Let’s remain united, through struggle, we shall overcome.
I wish all of you a Happy and Reassuring Easter Holiday.
