Makerere University Business School [MUBS] and Nkumba University are the fore pointed universities that are more likely to quit the University Football League of 2017.
In our survey as we spoke to the Association of University Sports [AUUS] General secretary Mr. Patrick Sebuliba,[also the sports tutor of Nkumba university], there are many loopholes in the federation . However, main being finance.
According to Sebuliba, many universities have not fully paid the annual subscription fee depending on when one last paid. But on the other hand, this might not be the main issue.
Hilary Kimbugwe, the sports tutor of MUBS is a two time champion who cannot just be thrown like that.
“There is no life in the UFL if MUBS is not there. I think this is just a trick to push us pay” says Hilary.
He adds that universities work with financial calendars for each financial year and does not expect all universities to have completed payments.
“We have been working with AUUS for the last ten years and above during the period when it was called the National University Sports Federation of Uganda [NUSFU]. Up to date we are still with them. Do they want to say that they demand us money from the period since they started?” asks Hilary
According to the league manager, Mr. Tumwesigye Anthony, universities that would not have fully subscribed to AUUS shall be kicked out of the tournament.
“I am only waiting for the mail from AUUS then tomorrow we make draws.today was the deadline for the final payments of the owed universities” says Anthony.
Last year’s league was won by Kampala University which is eagerly waiting to swap the trophy a third time.
