Kenya and Burundi are the two East African countries Tanzania President John Magufuli has not visited since he was elected president. Now, when he was invited to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (Ticad), tongues are wagging in the region, why the nonsense man is avoiding Kenya.
Tanzania citizens are fear for the worst, their world famous president could slowly be turning into a dictator, also Kenyan Foreign Affairs minister Amina Mohamed on Monday said Magufuli had sent a representative in Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.
Magufuli who has only travelled to Uganda and Rwanda since coming to power last October, and sends representatives on other events, issued an order stopping his officials from making unnecessary visits.
Magufuli has instead concentrated on domestic issues, such as whipping the corrupt government officials as well as putting the liberal media in line.
The no nonsense leader first foreign trip was to Rwanda in April to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the genocide and the following month attended the inauguration of President Museveni for his fifth term.
He has skipped at least five international meetings, including the World Trade Organisation (WTO) conference in Nairobi last December, the AU Summit in Addis Ababa in January, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) in Nairobi last month as well as the AU Summit in Kigali.
Ticad was expected to finally bring him to Kenya, especially with Japan dangling massive investment pledges.
