Education and Sports minister Janet Museveni has directed that Makerere University opens for studies on Tuesday.
Mrs Museveni was meeting a section of students at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday when she asked students to resists the temptation to demonstrate as their university was to reopen on Tuesday.
Students that met Janet said it was unfair for students to be denied the right to education when they have to pay their fees in full.
Janet said she had agreed with the University council on the move. Students at Makerere and Kyambogo universities warned about striking if non teaching staff don’t return to their stations on Tuesday. Mrs Museveni’s baptism as education minister was to quell the riot of non teaching university staff who are demanding an increment on their salaries.
The minister met them last week however they have not returned to work on Monday as expected.
Janet thanked students for agreeing to meet with her peacefully.
“I want to thank you students for having turned up peacefully to meet me and we resolve this issue of national importance….the University Council has assured me that Makerere is opening tomorrow,” she said.
Makerere University had earlier communicated to public that the university had been closed until further notice.
