Residents of Mukono Municipality have today stormed the resident of their area MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke asking her to rescue them from enforcement officers who are demolishing their businesses on the roadsides.

Some of these business men and women were traders dealing in wielding, pork dealers among others whose businesses were totally destroyed.

This forced Nambooze on bed rest to come out of her house with the help of a walking stick to attend to the disgruntled traders.

The traders explained to legislator that they tried to move their merchandise beyond the road reserve but the law enforcement officers adamantly demolished their businesses and confiscated some of their valuables.

They said currently they are left with no capital and some of them have loans in various banking institutions.

While responding to their queries , Nambooze disclosed that the Municipal authority is doing the eviction illegally  because it is a mandate of Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to evict people from road reserves in question.

Nambooze asked traders to learn to resist unlawful tendencies which are aimed at taking them back to villages saying that it’s the only way they can survive a poorly governed country.

She promised to take their petition to parliament and also write to UNRA to ask them whether they are the one terrorizing traders in the municipality as its alleged but some officials.

Nambooze asked them to join her on Friday to storm the Municipal offices for explanations regarding the whole issue.

She also visited some of the affected areas where property worth millions of shillings was destroyed.

However, James Nsimbi, the head of operations revealed that the aim of the operation is aimed at clearing the walk-ways to ease movement of pedestrians.
