A member of parliament has said the government’s decision to promote only new crop yields is partly to blame for the current famine situation in most parts of the country.

According to Erute county south mp, Jonathan Odur, government chose to promote crops that take little time to mature without considering how long the variety can last.

Speaking to journalists at Parliament, Odur said unless the government embrace old crop varieties that take long to mature but are resistant to climatic changes alongside new ones, hunger will be a big issue within the country. He urges that the new technology is good but the old crop variety should not be eliminated since the masses will benefit from them and hunger will not be widespread as it is today.
