The minister f or Trade and Industry, Amelia Kyambadde has this morning clarified on a query to ban alcohol producers who pack in sachets.
Speaking to the press at the media centre, Kyambadde said that for manufacturers to turn from sachets to bottles they are to be given ample time which the government has done and with effect from today until September 30th 2017, the government believes that these manufacturers would have been transformed.
She said that districts have been coming up with by laws concerning alcohol in sachets so the government had to come up with a stand concerning the product.
She adds that even government is going to experience reduction in taxes since its income is going to go down.
The minister further said there are very many alcohol processors who are not registered with the Uganda Alcohol Association.
“Uganda alcohol association has to come up with a memorandum with the government to certify only those without sachets.” Said Kyambadde.
The alcohol producers are also required to register with the Uganda national bureau of standards which then has to publicize a certification to the producers.
She also commended local authorities from the districts to ban sachets even at the grassroots since that is where even those who pack from their compounds originate.
