The high court judge, Justice David Batema has asked the government to legalise abortion in Uganda. He urged health practitioners to be trained on how to handle abortion cases.
The legalization of abortion will mainly help to cater for victims of rape and incest to terminate unwanted pregnancies.
“Women have a right to terminate unwanted pregnancies. If there’s a right to treat pigs, a right to treat birds why not a right to abort unwanted babies?” Justice Batema stressed out.
However, one of the legislators, the former minister for ethics and intergrity James Nsaba Buturo vowed to block any such bill in parliament.
Early last year, the same judge criticized the clergy on marriage vows. He said women should fight for their rights, they did not need endorsement of a priestto quit an abusive marriage that is dangerous to their lives.
