Kenya and Rwanda have banned poultry products from Uganda after a confirmed outbreak of bird flu until situation normalizes.
Kenya’s Chief Veterinary Officer Juma Ngeiywa said “It is risky to us. We have to ban the movement of poultry products and birds from Uganda”.
Announcing similar ban, Rwanda’s Agriculture Minister Geraldine Mukeshimana said the ban does not only apply to poultry products from Uganda but from all countries in Europe where bird flu has been detected.
Early this year, the ministry of Agriculture received reports from Uganda Wildlife Education Centre ( UWEC) indicating mass death of wild birds seen by fishermen at Lutembe beach at the shores of Lake Victoria near Entebbe and Masaka district respectively.
The ministry immediately sent a team to investigate the mass bird death together with a team from government chemist and UWEC, unfortunately, the results turned out positive. The officials detected a very serious disease known as Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) that affects both humans and animals.
