Nairobi city traffic department did not clear traffic for Tanzania’s President John Pombe Magufuli who was on his maiden visit in the country since he was elected president.
Magufuli has stayed away from visiting neighboring Kenya, choosing to visit Rwanda, Uganda and Ethiopia.
It seems the gesture rubbed Kenyans the bad way.
Now as Magufuli visited Nairobi on Monday for the first time as president, the man who enjoys an almost celebrity status in Kenya for his cost-cutting measures and no-nonsense attitude towards corruption, was first received by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Magufuli who is on a two days visit was stuck in the heavy Nairobi traffic jam, and at some point, was forced to walk on the street to beat his next schedule on time.
In Kenya like in Uganda, visiting heads of state are accorded honorary treatment and traffic is cleared for their convoys.
According to Kenyan newspaper The Star website, President Magufuli was forced to walk from the Intercontinental Hotel in the Central Business District to pay his respects at the Jomo Kenyatta mausoleum.
However, photographs later show Tanzanian President John Magufuli inspecting a guard of honour at State House in Nairobi and later walking hand in hand with President Uhuru.
