At least 55 people including 14 police officers have been killed in fresh Kasese attacks where the Uganda Peoples’Defence Force (UPDF), police tried to disband suspected rebel group in the Rwenzori region.
Yesterday heavy gunfire ignited in Kasese town and went through the night as security operatives pursued people suspected to be involved in the fresh attacks in the region.
Police spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi told journalists at Police headquarters in Kampala on Sunday that 14 police officers and 41 Rwenzori assailants were killed in Kasese clashes leaving two UPDF soldiers injured on Saturday.
“We believe these attacks have a political motive and have so far arrested 15 key ring leaders. This is not an insurgency but rather a violent crime,” said Kaweesi.
On Thursday, eight assailants belonging to a rebel group, Kirumiramutima were shot dead in Kabarore by UPDF as the y were planning to attack a military base in the area.
