The Information and Communication Technology minister in conjunction with the National Information Technology Authority Uganda(NITA U) have announced the new plan which shall see Kampala city dwellers and some parts of Entebbe access free wi-fi effective 1 October.
The development was announced by Mr Frank Tumwebaze at the media centre in Kampala.
The free internet shall have no access to bad sites, no downloading if videos. Services will be running from 6pm-6am during weekdays as well as 3pm on Saturday through to Monday 6am.
With the help of the government and the president in the investment of National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI), free internet service has been made possible.
According to Mr Tumwebaze, so far 160 government ministries, institutions and agencies are connected to the NBI and the remaining agencies will also be connected by the next financial year.
“Internet access is no longer a luxury like it used to be but a necessity for all Ugandans, the ICT sector must remain a centre if this Countrywide transformation steering Uganda to world class productivity,” said Tumwebaze.
