All is not well for police officers who had made it a daily routine to get involved in wrongdoing whenever they are on duty.
Information reaching Watchdog indicates that police officers are going to start paying court awards themselves in case court rules against them unlike previously where the Attorney General has been held responsible.
According to the statement from government, in the first budget call circular for the FY 2016/2017, it was provided that, arising out of the challenges experienced in managing court awards, and in order to ensure that accounting officers are fully accountable for their actions, Government agreed to decentralize the payment of court Awards to the institutions where they accrue.
“This implies that where the actions of police officers lead court to give awards and/or compensation to victims, payments shall be borne by Uganda Police Force as an institution and not the Attorney General as has been the case,” statement partly read
“The purpose of this circular therefore, is to inform you that officers will be personally held accountable for their actions leading to court awards against UPF,” It further noted.
