Yesterday, Mr Ofwono Opondo  was re-appointed by President Yoweri Museveni as the Executive Director of the centre.

Mr Opondo has been the head of Uganda Media Centre and serving as the government spokesperson since 2013 after taking over from Mr Fred Opolot.

The centre was established in 2005 and it’s a government centre where from information concerning the government is communicated to the country and the world.

Mr Opondo is also the deputy NRM spokesman.

However, as government spokesperson Mr Opondo could be a footnote spokesperson.

Since the position of government spokesperson is now with the able and assertive Minister of Information Frank Tumwebaze, and Opondo works under him, it makes the man less today than he was a couple of years back when the Information docket was handled by less media friendly ministers.

It is once for Mr Opondo that National Resistance Movement where he is officially the deputy spokesman, now, is run by the Secretariat. Yet the secretariat has its communication officer in Rogers Mulindwa.

The question is: is Ofwono Opondo, a paper spokesperson?

The Media Centre however has become the go-to-place for government press conference of recent. Ofwono should just increase its visibility to make more relevant.

Mr Ofwono as one of president Museveni’s defender, remains an attack dog when it is necessary. He is one of the few people who defend the government position at the expense of looking silly. However, he still does his job.

It comes as a sigh of relief that OO got his contract extension despite the communication challenges (many communications points) in government. If he doesn’t work harder, he is rendering to make the Media Centre a media liaisons office.
