John Ddumba Sentamu is the current and 15 th Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, the oldest public university in Uganda since its establishment in 1922.
Here are the things you didn’t know about him;
1) He was born in 1953 (63 years) in Buddu county, Masaka District,central Uganda.Sentamu is married and was raised in a Roman catholic faith .
2) Ddumba Sentamu attended St. Mary’s College Kisubi for his 0-Level and A-Level classes (S1-S6). He then entered Makerere University in 1974, to study Economics, graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Economics ( BA.Econ. ), in 1977. He then left Makerere to
pursue further studies in Canada.He obtained the degree of Master of Arts in Economics (MA.Econ. ), from the University of Waterloo, in Waterloo , Ontario, Canada in 1979. He then returned to Makerere to pursue his doctorate degree, graduating with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), also in Economics.
3) The illustrious Prof. Ddumba Sentamu has made a lasting mark on Uganda’s education sector through his diligent
service as Council Member and Vice Chairperson – Governing Council Kisubi Brothers University College, a
position he has held since 2008; Caretaker Vice Chancellor Ndejje University Uganda (1999-2001); Council Member
Muteesa I Royal University (2011-to date); Member, Board of Governors Rubaga Boys’ Senior Secondary School (1999 to date); and Member, Board of Governors Nkoni Senior Secondary School (2000-2002).
4)Apart from being an academician, Ddumba is also an economist and banker. He has influenced the positive trend of the economic sector as a Member, Board of Management for Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC) (1994- 2007), Member, Board of Directors and Chairperson of Human Resource and Business Committee – Pride Microfinance Uganda Limited (Oct. 2000- Oct.2002) and as a Member and Treasurer of Uganda Economics Association. (1987 – 2005).
5) He also serves as chairman of the board of Centenary Bank , the second-largest indigenous commercial bank in the Uganda.
