Newly elected President Adama Barrow’s adviser has said more than $11m is missing from The Gambia’s state coffers after the departure of former President Yahya Jammeh who has been in power for 22 years.
On the night before Jammeh left the country, luxury cars and other items were seen being loaded on to a Chadian cargo plane.
Jammeh and his family headed into political exile Saturday night, ending a 22-year reign of fear and a post-election political standoff that threatened to provoke a regional military intervention when he clung to power.
The flight came almost 24 hours after Jammeh announced on state television he was ceding power to the newly inaugurated Adama Barrow, in response to mounting international pressure for him to step aside.
