NBS TV’s MC Kats has narrated how expensive it is to treat the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
Through his social media page on Tuesday, MC Kats opened up that he’s currently on cross roads after losing his his step mother and aunt to Covid-19. He said they left behind a debt of at least Shs30 million in hospital bills.
“Lost my step mum yesterday due to Covid-19. But the bill in two weeks is 13m. I lost my aunty due to Covid today and the bill is 17m. Omwavu waking. Wear your mask,” the NBS After5 show co-host said.
According to Daily Monitor, a few months ago, private hospitals were charging between Shs3.5 million and Shs10 million per day for treatment of a critically ill Covid-19 patient.
At public facilities, the costs are as follows:
N95 mask – Shs20,000 to Shs25,000
Drugs for ICU
Remdesivir. Shs300,000 to one million per dosage depending on the brand
Anticoagulant for blood clotting problem. Shs50,000 per dose.
For non-severe
Vitamin C. Shs3,000 full dose for adults for 5 days.
Azithromycin. Shs14,000 full dose for adults for five days
Zinc. A strip is Shs3,000 full dose for adults for five days
Hydroxychloroquine. Shs14,000 full dose for adults for 5 days.
Oxygen
70kgs cylinder. Shs1.03 million, has 6800 litres of oxygen.
Refilling is Shs35,000. This can last 22 hours at a flow rate of 5 litres per minute.
35kgs cylinder. Costs more than One million, has around 4,100 litres and refilling is Shs25,000, this can last around 13 hours.
18kgs cylinder. Cost Shs1.02 million, has 1360 litres and refilling is Shs20,000, this can last around four and a half hours.
Oxygen concentrator
Shs3.8 million for the one that produces 5 litres of 100 percent oxygen per hour
Shs4 million for the one that produces 10 litres of 100 percent oxygen per hour.
