The Media Council of Uganda has stopped Amakula International Film Festival from screening a Cameroon Film called “Chilli On The Lips” for having a ‘Bobi Wine’ like story-line.
According to the Festival organizers, Media Council classified all the 34 films that were meant to be screened at the event, but when they saw the story-line of Chilli On The Lips, the council became hesitant and in return refused to authorize it.
The story-line of this Film is based on a Cameroon artiste and freedom fighter called Valsero, and just like Uganda’s Bobi Wine, Valsero sings and raps about the social problems, oppression of the people, economic issues, and democracy in Cameroon.
Valsero shouldered the role of the young people’s spokesperson, to fight against their government that has stayed in power for a long time and yet the country (Cameroon) is currently filled with youths utmost.
“We are under 20 but governed by old people”, and through his music, Valsero leads a team of fellow youths to fight for democracy, claiming that the government system is filled with elderly people, who don’t understand the needs of the majority population who are Youths.
In this Film, Valsero is fighting to advocate for power in hands of people, something that his government doesn’t agree with.
It was directed by Laurene Lepeytre and it runs for over 50 minutes. The movie was slated to be screened on March 15th in the exhibition hall of Uganda National Museum, but despite being on schedule, Amakula organizers couldn’t screen it due to Media Council’s directive.
