Do you remember the jingle ‘Bosiko Katala’?
Or ‘Malaika’, ‘Chips na Ketchup’, ‘Mbozi Zamalwa’, ‘Mataala’, ‘Kiki Ekiganye’, ‘Kabulengane’, ‘Kyolowooza’ among others?
Then you probably have a hint that they were all written by the same guy, Yese Oman Rafiki. And although the others were given to musicians Vinka, Winnie Nwagi, Bebe Cool and Irene Ntale, Rafiki wrote and voiced ‘Bosiko Katala’.
Bosiko Katala aside, the unsung hero is also the brain behind several radio and TV adverts.
And that is how big he is in the game of music today.
Previously independent, but with a foot at Swangz Avenue, Rafiki recently started his own label – Route Entertainment and signed Phic Wills and Vivian Tendo.
This led to speculation that the so called big artistes that had benefited from his craft were going to feed on crumbs since all the cream would go to his artistes.
Infact, Tendo recently released a song titled ‘Hajjati wa Hajji’ while Wills outed his first single, ‘Nesiimye Nyo’.
With this development, fans claim that Tendo might be a big a threat to Vinka, given that most of the songs and music techniques that bought Vinka fame where organised by Rafiki.
And with Tendo’s latest projects, it’s clear that Rafiki knows his game.
However, Rafiki claims that eventhough he has signed artistes under his label, he will still write songs for other musicians.
