The current hullabaloo surrounding the fifth edition of the Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) is Ugandan fans calling for the boycott of nominee Bebe Cool in favour of Diamond Platinum as Best Male East African Artiste.
What Ugandan fans have forgotten however, is the fact that there are three female Ugandan artistes that will be counting on them for support. Sheeba Karungi, Irene Namatovu and Sandra Nankoma are all nominated for Best East African Female Artiste.
Sheebah’s Mummy Yo video by Sasha Vybz enabled her to scoop a nomination, well as Nsambila Nyuma nga Janzi by Irene Namatovu booked her a spot at AFRIMA.
Afro-soul/Jazz singer Sandra Nankoma’s nomination came as a surprise to many Ugandans but her vocal power in Kaddugala makes her a stand out candidate in this category.
The three are up against Betty G (Ethiopia), Maua Sama (Tanzania), Petra (Kenya), Rash (Kenya), and Vibe (Rwanda).
Ethiopian Betty G scooped six nominations, the highest by any female – Best Artiste in African Jazz, Best Artiste in African Rock, Album of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Best Female artiste in Eastern Africa and Revelation of the African Continent.
This year’s edition takes place on November 22-24 and will be hosted by comedian Michael Blackson, Pearl Thusi and Anita Erskine.
