It’s true no one has a monopoly to a particular hairstyle. However, why do women still plait a hairstyle that has almost became a ‘uniform’ in town?
Shanx Tess, a hairstylist with Urban Salon, says sometimes a particular hairstyle becomes too common depending on its price, trend, maintenance and convenience, and people care less about the uniformity sometimes.
And since the bible also talks about hair as the ‘woman’s crowning glory’, we tasked Shanx to help us break down the most trending hairstyle in Uganda currently and why they trend.
Dreadlocks
Gone are the days when dreadlocks were considered as a hairstyle for Rastafarians, not forgetting how expensive it was to plait this particular hairstyle.
Today, you would be blind not to see a woman spotting dreadlocks after every 10 metre. Shanx notes that dreadlocks are on trend because they are cheap to plait and maintain, than it was back then.
Unlike other usual hairstyles, one can have dreadlocks for months without visiting a salon for repair. The other beauty with dreads is that the older they get, the better they look.
In Kampala, plaiting dreadlocks is about Shs100,000 minimum, and a tin of gel required to maintain these dreads is about Shs30,000.
It can take someone with dreadlock over six months without spending much on hair, thus making it affordable. Plus dreads are easy to style and one can wash them regularly at home.
Pencil
It’s one of the oldest but yet the most sought after hair styles these days. For every day that goes by, a hairdresser will invent new styles while twisting and styling Pencil, thus giving it a better new look all the times.
In a professional salon, it takes about four hours to plait pencil. However, sometimes it might take longer depending on how one wants her hair to look.
On average, salons charge about Shs30,000 on basic Pencil, though this price tends to be higher depending on how one wants their Pencil to be styled.
Pencil can take about two months before it wears out, but the best way to keep it for long is by applying diplosion oil in the hair instead of gel, to prevent skin inching and to also keep your natural hair in a good condition.
Crotchets
Crotchets are on a high demand these days. We can say they have slowly reduced the demand of braids. They are very easy to maintain and take about four hours in the salon while plaiting them, than it is with braids.
Crotches are curly, soft, easy to style and sometimes look like natural hair. They come in different colors and kinds, thus making them good for everyone in spite of their skin complexion and forehead.
Crotchets are packed in boxes, and one needs at least two boxes to bring out a perfect look. When well maintained, they can take about two months before looking old. They only require a hair spray to make them look good every day.
Human weaves
The price of human weaves is slightly high but worth it. According to Shanx, a box of these weaves can be bought at Shs150,000 (minimum) but it can even go for a million depending on the brand or quality.
It’s alleged that Human weaves are the easiest hairstyle to maintain as they don’t require spray or gel, but rather water, and this explains why they are expensive.
Shanx said that with a this weave, one just applies a few drops of water, combs and the hair looks new again, plus, it’s easy to style and never gets old no matter how many times one plaits it, provided its well maintained.
This hairstyle can for over six months, and even after removing it, one can keep the weave, and plaint it again like it’s new.
Twist wigs
Women loved twist but many got tired of seating in the salon for over 10 hours. This led to the death of hairstyle. Good news is that this hairstyle has comeback but in a wig style.
New inventions were made and currently one can have their hair ‘twisted’ in a second, plus its now cheap and very durable.
With the twist wig, girls go to salon and do simple ‘Biswairi’ which takes less than an hour, and later just place the wigs on their head.
These wigs go for Shs120,000 in Gazaland, but prices might be high if one buys the wig in a salon or shopping mall.
