Edwin Katamba is celebrated events MC and television host without a doubt. Better known as MC Kats, the After 5 host has been the face of events for close to a decade. And more, starting out his television career at the now defunct Wavah Broadcasting Station – hosting a teens’ show, before moving to NTV.
Today, Friday, fans, musicians, events promoters and all of those that have followed his career over time, will converge at Wave Lounge to celebrate the man himself as he hosts the first edition of King of Mic.
It is the build up to the story that has captured the imagination of many. Since the ‘King of Mic’ announcement was made early this week, the internet has gone gaga with the #McKatsChallenge. The Kats themed memes, remind us that the man has been around for years and only ages like fine wine, in what industry watchers say could ‘be the best creative digital campaign of 2018’.
For example, journalist Muhereza Kyamutetera writes “In this picture- probably taken in 1902, Mc Kats (cycled), then known as Mussajalumbwa Katambala- later Mc Kats, poses with Apolo Kivebulaya, somewhere in Buganda. Lengela amaswagga.”
In another black and white photo, actor Kasule Douglas Beda captions a photo, “In 1967 during the opening of the first apartments in Kampala, security was tight. The Emcee then was Kats. Those days he loved military fatigues and in this particular shot, the guest of honor had arrived. Later on, he was given the office of mayor but he refused.”
Elsewhere, the legendary emcee is super imposed in photos with Jesus on the cross, at the last supper, on Mount Sinai.
You can still get in on the #McKatsChallenge before heading to Wave Lounge to support MC Kats.
