Celebrated Ugandan artist and Presidential Adviser on the Creatives Industry, Eddy Kenzo, has heaped praise on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his transformative leadership, particularly in the energy sector. Kenzo’s remarks come just days after the commissioning of the Karuma Hydro Power Plant, a 600-megawatt facility that significantly bolsters Uganda’s energy capacity.

Kenzo, known for his global music success, expressed his admiration through a statement in which he highlighted the stark difference in Uganda’s energy generation before and after Museveni took power in 1986. Drawing comparisons, Kenzo pointed out that from 1894, when Uganda became a British protectorate, until 1986, the country had only achieved a mere 60 MW of electricity generation. In contrast, under President Museveni’s leadership, Uganda has increased its capacity by 1,940 MW, reaching a total of 2,000 MW in just 38 years.

“From the time Uganda became a British protectorate in 1894 to when President Museveni and his team took power in 1986, we only achieved 60 MW in about 92 years. With Mzee Museveni leading the country from 1986, Uganda has added 1,940 MW to make 2,000 MW in just 38 years. You can do the math in other sectors,” said Kenzo in his message.

The artist did not stop at praising the strides in energy development alone but extended his remarks to other sectors. He mentioned the significant improvements in security, education, population growth, roads, hospitals, exports, and the media industry, all of which he attributes to Museveni’s leadership. “We must give President Museveni his flowers,” Kenzo concluded.

The Karuma Hydro Power Plant, located on the Nile River, is expected to play a critical role in stabilizing Uganda’s electricity supply, reducing outages, and fostering industrial growth. It is the largest power project in Uganda’s history and is seen as a cornerstone of the country’s Vision 2040 agenda to become a middle-income nation.

The President’s efforts to expand Uganda’s power generation capacity have been widely acknowledged as crucial for national development. Besides the Karuma project, other major plants like the Isimba Hydro Power Station (183 MW) and the Bujagali Hydro Power Station (250 MW) have been commissioned during his tenure.

Kenzo’s tribute reflects growing sentiment among various stakeholders that Museveni’s administration has made significant contributions to the country’s infrastructural and socio-economic development, laying the foundation for future growth.
