The Chinese Government has donated to Uganda US$300,000 in appreciation of the crucial role that the country has played in the mediation efforts in regional peacekeeping and security.
This was contained in a message to President Yoweri Museveni from his Chinese counterpart, Mr. Xi Jinping. The message was delivered to President Museveni by the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Mr. Zhao Yali, who called on the President at State House, Entebbe this afternoon to take leave of him at the end of his 5-year tour of duties in Uganda.
Bidding farewell to Ambassador Zhao Yali, President Museveni expressed the need for Uganda and China to establish bilateral friendship associations to promote stronger relationship between the two countries.
“More people in the world are getting richer. This means that enhanced trade relations boost more trade,” he said.
“Introducing friendship associations between the two countries will promote, attract and clarify strategic areas of trade and investment for economic development like textiles, steel milling and food processing,” observed the President.
Mr. Museveni said that Uganda communities are being sensitized on practicing systematic methods of farming adding that this is a transit from traditional to industrial-commercial farming. He said that the Movement Government has plans to amend the constitution focusing on the promotion of extensive agriculture.
The President thanked Ambassador Zhao Yali for encouraging Chinese construction companies to work in Uganda that has resulted in their undertaking of the construction of Karuma, Isimba hydro power stations and the Kampala – Entebbe Express Highway, among others.
The outgoing envoy, Zhao Yali, who is the 16th Chinese Ambassador to serve in Uganda, said that under the Chinese Bilateral Investment (CBI) policy, his country has offered 200 scholarships to Ugandan students in various educational disciplines, including security, medicine and pharmacy to strengthen the cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries in the educational sector. He saluted President Museveni for his personal guidance and support that made him accomplish his diplomatic duties and while in Uganda.
