Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, Uganda – February 17, 2025 – The 22nd African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) Congress and Exhibition is currently underway at Speke Resort Munyonyo, bringing together key stakeholders from over 40 countries to discuss critical issues in water governance, sanitation, innovation, and technology. Running under the theme “Water and Sanitation for All: A Secure Future for Africa,” the conference seeks to develop sustainable solutions for the continent’s persistent water and sanitation challenges.
The event, which commenced on February 16 and runs through February 20, has drawn the participation of policy leaders, engineers, utility providers, financial institutions, and civil society organizations. Delegates are engaged in high-level discussions on water resource management, capacity building, and financing frameworks essential for improving water and sanitation infrastructure across Africa.
Museveni Calls for African-Led Solutions
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in his address, urged AfWASA members to embrace self-reliance and develop homegrown solutions to the sector’s challenges. “We must foster a culture of self-sufficiency and stop relying on foreign models that do not always align with Africa’s realities. By leveraging our own expertise, we can provide long-lasting solutions for water and sanitation,” he said.
Showcasing Innovations at the Exhibition
The congress features a vibrant exhibition showcasing the latest technologies, innovations, and service delivery models in the water and sanitation sector. The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has a prominent presence, displaying advancements in water treatment, digital metering, and service expansion strategies aimed at achieving universal access to clean water in Uganda. Other exhibitors include global water technology firms, non-governmental organizations, and research institutions presenting cutting-edge solutions in sustainable water management and sanitation.
Financing Water for the Future
A crucial aspect of the congress is financing the water and sanitation sector. AfDB Group’s Acting Director for Water and Sanitation, Mtchera Chirwa, emphasized the need for immediate action, outlining three key steps: improving utility performance, ensuring financial sustainability, and strengthening the enabling environment to attract investment.
“Access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right, yet millions of Africans remain without these services. We must move from promises to concrete actions by enhancing efficiency in water service provision and strengthening financial models to sustain sector growth,” Chirwa noted.
Women Taking the Lead
One of the standout sessions at AfWASA 2025 was the 5th Professional Women in Water and Sanitation Forum, where female leaders discussed “Women as Stewards in Empowering Change for Sustainable Water and Sanitation Service Delivery.” The forum emphasized the vital role women play in water governance, from policy formulation to grassroots advocacy.
Dr. Patrick Moriarty of IRC WASH echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of cross-sectoral partnerships. “We must engage with other sectors, connect with different systems, and leverage partnerships to achieve real progress,” he urged.
Speke Resort Munyonyo: A World-Class Venue
The choice of Speke Resort Munyonyo as the venue for AfWASA 2025 highlights Uganda’s capacity to host high-profile international events. Looking Ahead
As the congress progresses, experts will continue discussions on innovative approaches, smart technologies, and collaborative efforts to improve water accessibility across Africa. The outcomes of these discussions are expected to shape policies and investments that will drive sustainable water management on the continent.
With Uganda hosting the 22nd edition of AfWASA, the country reaffirms its commitment to playing a leading role in Africa’s water and sanitation transformation. The congress remains a beacon of hope for millions still lacking access to these essential services, pushing for a future where Water and Sanitation for All becomes a reality across the continent.
