Masaka – Uganda Peoples Defense Forces has confirmed the killing of two soldiers during last night gunfire exchange inside Masaka Armoured Brigade barracks.
The barracks is located in Kasijagirwa village in Katwe-Butego Division.
Captain Benon Mutatina, the Masaka Armoured Brigade Political Commissar says the incident happened at around midnight when Joseph Arioni, a soldier attached to this barracks “went wild” and opened fire at two soldiers who were guarding what he calls a Technical Store.
He says the two soldiers only identified with one name each, as Babugo and Baingana, died instantly.
He says immediately after shooting these soldiers, Arioni grabbed their guns and ran away.
He says soldiers attempted to shoot at him but he overpowered them and escaped. He says they are hunting for him.
The night shootout has caused panic at residents near the barracks who claim it was an attack. One resident who identified himself as Mwesige tells Uganda Radio Network that the shootout lasted for about one hour.
Joe Walusimbi, the Masaka Resident District Commissioner says the shootout was from within. He denies reports that the barracks was attacked.
He however says security is investigating the cause of the shootout.
Police have picked the bodies of killed soldiers and took them to Masaka hospital mortuary.
