Experts have told pregnant mothers not to taste any alcohol during the nine months. Health experts have cautioned pregnant women against the consumption of alcohol. This came out when experts raised concerns over the increasing number of pregnant women taking alcohol.
Speaking at a workshop organised by the Uganda Alcohol Policy Alliance in Kampala, the Executive director of Butabika mental hospital, Dr David Basangwa said, alcohol is not just dangerous to the expectant mothers but to the foetus as well. “We always advise mothers that are pregnant to avoid using alcohol, if a mother who is pregnant uses alcohol it goes to the baby that is forming in the womb and it has a lot of effects it does to that human body so the child will be born with a lot of complications and will not be able to usually survive the first year of life,” Dr Basangwa said.
The conference was addressed by Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze who is introducing a bill in Parliament to control selling of alcoholic drinks to among others already drunk people, children and pregnant mothers.
