Security in Kabale town on Thursday while trying to enforce preventive measures against COVID-19 caned and arrested business people who tried to defy the presidential directives.
President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday evening announced the halting of public transport for 14 days as a preventive measure against the spread of the deadly virus.
Museveni also banned all congested public markets that don’t sell food in his directive.
Police in Kabale town battled vendors and business men who tried to defy the orders.
“So far if you move in our town, there is nobody with a passenger on a boda boda. They have all complied by force. We are impounding motorcycles with owners, or passengers are punished personally if they are found defying the directive. All the taxis aren’t in town. There is no tax carrying passengers they have all complied. We have informed all taxi owners for that matter,” said Kabale DPC Brian Ampeire.
DPC Ampeire further said they have advised people to move to their villages, especially those that do not have heavy loads of work in town.
“We shall ensure that all presidential directives are fully implemented. We have even advised those with less workload I town to leave to their villages for a while. I have visited almost all the radio stations around town over the matter.”
He warned those hiking prices of commodities around town especially sugar that they would be arrested.
More than 487,000 people around the world have been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University. About 117,000 have recovered, while more than 22,000 people have died.
