Guinness World Records has dismissed claims that Uganda‘s opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye is world’s most arrested man.
Early this week, reports made rounds on social media alleging that Besigye had been recognized as the most arrested man in the world following his arrest on Monday 20, 2020. The four time presidential contender was arrested in Jinja Town and detained at Nalufenya Police Station.
Besigye and other Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leaders were accused of holding illegal activities without seeking authorisation from the police force.
It was reported that Besigye was preparing to address rally of FDC supporters at the Bugembe Stadium in the town when he was whisked away before being freed a few hours later.
The reports claimed that 30 percent of Besigye’s arrests took place in Uganda during the 2016 election year when he was detained over 15 times.
However, speaking to Kenya’s Nairobi news website on Thursday, Guinness World Records described the reports as untrue.
“This is not correct. It does seem to have been very widely misreported,” Guinness World Records responded.
The Guinness World Records is a reference book published annually, listing world records both of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world.
