Allan Okello and Juliet Nalukenge were crowned as the best Airtel Male and Female respective most valuable players of the year, 2019 during a Airtel-Fufa Awards that were at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala on Saturday.
Okello a KCCA fc skipper was in contention with Proline FC’s Bright Anukani and clubmate Mustafa Kizza.
To clinch the gong, he won the Star Times Uganda Premier League, the FUFA Super Cup , the CECAFA Kagame Cup and was also part of the Cranes team that qualified for the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN)
On the other hand, the Kawempe Muslim School female star Juliet Nalukenge beat 2016 award winner Hasifa Nassuna and Fauzia Najjemba to win her maiden award.
She also had a successful 2019 helping Kawempe Muslim to win both the national and the East Africa Secondary Schools’ championship, she captained Uganda to win the COSAFA U17 Championship scoring 18 goals hence the tournament top scorer before scoring 5 goals as Uganda finished 3rd in the CECAFA Women’s Challenge Cup.
Both players were rewarded by Shs1 million, trophy, medal and drove home with a car[Subaru Forester] each.
This year’s awards had a number of changes which included the nomination process involving each of the captain and coach of the Uganda top flight leagues for the male and female category.
Unlike the previous editions that had left the voting to fans, the fifth edition had Coaches’ votes contributing 50% , captains votes contribute 25% and the remaining 25% was left for fans.
In addition to the above changes was the nomination process starting from 16 player instead of the previous three that kept on reducing to five and then to final three who head to the awards ceremony.
The final changes were the introduction of the new awards of Airtel FUFA Best XI for Women, Airtel FUFA Women coach of the year, Airtel FUFA favorite team fans of the year and the Airtel FUFA Members association award.
