The Chief Justice of Uganda Bart Katureebe has said that come next year in July he will be retiring.
He made this revelation during a dinner party at his residence in Kampala where he had invited special guests including the Chief Justice of Kenya David Kenani Maraga.
“For me, it’s goodbye because next time by this time I will be out of office and I will definitely not be your Chief Justice ,” he said.
Katureebe assumed the office of Chief Justice on 5th March 2015 but before that, he was serving as a Supreme Court judge.
Next year on 20th June, Katureebe will be making 70 years and according to constitution,a Chief Justice must be below 70 years of age.
Who is Bart Katurebe?
He was born on 20 June 1950, in Rugazi Village, Rubirizi District. His parents are Yowana Magunda and Virginia Ngonzi.
He started his journey of education at Rugazi Primary School elementary schooling from 1957 to 1962. From 1963 to 1968 he went to St. Joseph Junior Secondary School in Mbarara district and Kitunga High School in Ntungamo District for his O-Level education.
He later attended Namilyango College, an all-boys boarding school in Mukono District, for his A-Level education from 1969 to 1970.
After fours years, he graduated from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Laws degree. He went on to receive his Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre (LDC).
From 1975 until 1983 He worked as a state attorney in the Ministry of Justice from 1975 up to 1983. He then went into private practice until 1988 when he has appointed the deputy minister for regional cooperation a position he held for three years.
In 1991 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology till 1992, he then served as State Minister for Health and a member of the National Resistance Council, a legislative body at that time from1992 to 1996.
He served as a member of the Constituent Assembly representing Bunyaruguru County, Rubirizi District From 1994 to 1995.
In 1996 he was appointed minister of justice, constitutional affairs and attorney general till 2001, He then went back to private practice where he started his law firm Kampala Associated Advocates. However he did not stay there for long after being appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court, from there he was appointed chief justice on 5 March ,2015.
