The Makerere University guild president Julius Kateregga has gone missing minutes after leaving nbs TV.
Kateregga was on Wednesday morning hosted on nbs Tv’s Morning Breeze show where he discussed a number of issues concerning the escalating tensions at the oldest and biggest university in the country. He was hosted along with the university’s publicist Dr Muhammad Kiggundu.
During the show, Katerega pinned Dr Eria Hisali and Gordon Murangira of fanning the strike and refusing to dialogue with the students.
Hisali is the Principal of the College of Business and Management Sciences, Makerere University while Murangira is the Personal Assistant to the Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe.
The duo are also accused of switching off security lights and cameras on Thursday night and allegedly allowing into university premises military personnel who brutalized students in their halls of residence.
On his part, Dr Kiggundu promised that the university management would amicably work with the students’ guild to ensure that the situation returns back to normal.
However, after the show, Kateregga was allegedly trailed by yet to be identified people before they kidnapped him.
According to our source who preferred anonymity, all his known phone numbers have been switched off.
“We have been waiting for him here at campus since he was supposed to address a general assembly but we cannot reach him. His phone numbers are off, we think he has been kidnapped,” the source said.
Since last week, Makerere University students have been protesting against the 15 per cent tuition increment. They demand that it should be scrapped on grounds that it is unfair to privately sponsored students.
The development comes hot on the heels of President Yoweri Museveni’s call for dialogue between the two conflicting parties.
“This morning, the President has spoken to the university council chair and the guild president, urging them to meet. He has also ordered the withdrawal of the military police from the university. The Uganda Police will maintain law and order,” Presidential Press Secretary Don Wanyama said on Tuesday.
