Over 12 people have been confirmed dead in an accident that happened on Monday night at Walumbe junction, Buwenge town council along Jinja-Kamuli highway.
The accident is said to have occurred when a truck reg number UAK 344V carrying sugar cane failed to climb a hill at Walumbe junction, Buwenge Town Council on Jinja – Kamuli highway and rolled back before it overturned.
According to Daily Monitor newspaper, as police and residents were trying to clear the truck off the road, another lorry registration number UAK 996Z, also loaded with sugar cane rammed into them.
The victims include a police officer who was directing traffic on the road.
Moses Batwala, a former district councillor who rescued some of the victims said that he counted more than 10 bodies that were taken to Buwenge health centre IV mortuary.
“Our efforts now are on taking the badly injured to Jinja referral hospital. The dead are at the mortuary,” he stated.
