Former Rwanda Amavubi coach Johnny McKinstry has landed in the country to take to replace Sebastien Desabre as Uganda Cranes head coach.
Desabre left his role at Cranes after guiding the national team to the last 16 stage of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt for Pyramids FC.
Now, the 34-year-old Northern Irishman who was welcomed by Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) CEO Edgar Watson will find a team, which under interim coach Abdallah Mubiru is 90 minutes away from securing a fifth successive CHAN finals appearance.
Cranes will also take on Burkina Faso in November as they kick off their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The 34-year-old Northern Irish told media at a special press conference that he has a burning desire to take the Cranes to the 2022 World Cup.
He has been in charge of Bangladesh side Saif Sporting Club after previously handling Sierra Leone at 27 years and Kauno Zalgris and Saif FC
According to sources privy to the recruitment information, McKinstry, who was dismissed by Rwanda after 15 months in-charge of Amavubi, defeated Hugo Broos and Luc Eymael for the Cranes to job.
In April, Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) was issued with an ultimatum by FIFA to settle a debt of about Rwf194 million ($215,000) for his unlawful dismissal in June 2016 or risk serious penalty.
‘We selected a coach who fits in our vision of being the number one footballing nation in Africa on and off the pitch”, Fufa tweeted.
