Uganda Police Force have arrested one of their own Police Constable Davis Taremwa attached to Counter-Terrorism whose gun was found at murder crime scene.
Police report pins Taremwa for leaving his deployment area with his gun and escorted the deceased without any permission from his bosses.
On Thursday night Merina Tumukunde and Nteyireho Rushegyera Joshua were shot dead at Nambigirwa Bridge along Kampala-Entebbe Express Highway in Katabi town council Wakiso District.
The preliminary report released on Friday morning indicates that one AK-47 rifle No. UG POL56-3100699022697 with 27 rounds of live ammunition was recovered at the scene.
While addressing journalists at Central Police Station in Kampala on Friday, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said that although they are yet to have a conclusive report as to why this double murder happened, their police officer whose gun was found in the victim’s motor vehicle reg no.UAW 543B Prado TX black in colour has a lot of questions to answer.
“Like I indicated the two directors of criminal investigations and Forensics visited the scene but the preliminary evidence which we have obtained indicates that Joshua on friendly terms requested one of our officers Taremwa to escort them at around 08:30 PM from Entebbe to Millennium Hotel in Zana where he had an arrangement of a business transition involving the sale of a car,” said Enanga.
According to the police mouthpiece, Taremwa who had been deployed at Hidden treasure Hotel in Entebbe was friends with Joshua for over two years.
“The officer withdrew from his deployment and the three went together up to Zana where they had contacts with the suspected buyer Suubi Robert whom we are also trying to get in touch with.”
However, Enanga said that the circumstances surrounding their movement from Zana up to the scene where the shooting occurred at Nambigirwa bridge are still unclear because the statement got from Teremwa indicates that when they reached Millennium Hotel, Joshua asked him to go and call Suubi from the hotel to finalise their transaction. While still tracing for Suubi, the victims drove off with his gun.
“This is not something that we can believe as Police since it was unclear. So far what we have indicates that Joshua and Florence teamed with our officer and fled to Zana at Millenium hotel so what we are trying to establish is what happened between Zana and Nambirigwa bridge where the shooting appears to have taken place,” Enanga noted.
Enanga said that their officer’s actions to leave his allocation and move with a gun are not justified anyway whether in the laws of Uganda or in training sessions officers obtain.
“For you to leave your position where you are lawfully deployed and then you go for private arrangements is not allowed in security guidelines and Taremwa will have to explain to us why he left his deployment location.”
Currently, according to Enanga, Suubi is not a suspect but Police need him to inform them of the arranged business transaction that he had with the victims before their assassination between 8:30-9:00 pm.
It’s has been discovered the three bullets are missing in the magazine found at the scene, the mobile phones from both victims will also help police in forensic analysis, a magazine bag which is believed to belong to Taremwa was also found at the crime scene and his headgear which was found in the vehicle.
