A newly born baby chimp has brought the number of human’s closest relatives at Ngamba Island to 50.
This after, Natasha, an adult female chimpanzee at the Sanctuary gave birth to a baby girl on Tuesday at 5:40pm.
The newly born chimp is female number 30 and baby number four to be born at the sanctuary off Lake Victoria.
Others born in the last 20 years while in captivity at Ngamba Island are Kyewunyo, Ruparelia and one male named Eazy.
The new mother and baby chimp are said to be in good health.
Natasha is estimated to have been born in 1990. She originated from Kibale at Itwara National Forest and was rescued from Arua. She is among the first 19 chimpanzees to arrive at the sanctuary on October 12, 1998.
Very popular at the sanctuary especially amongst the males since, Natasha is also known to continue cycling even while on contraceptive implants.
Natasha’s pregnancy was confirmed early in the year after conducting a routine pregnancy tests on the female Chimpanzees.
The new born will be named soon.
