The police department of Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Crime Intelligence (CID) has started inquiries into death threats towards Minister of State for Privatisation and Investment Evelyn Anite.
A week ago Anite revealed to the public that there is a group of people which she referred to as ‘Mafias’ aiming at taking her life because she insisted on carrying out an audit on the government owned Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL).
“The plan by the mafias is to take Anite out of the picture, I might die but history will judge them. You know the mafias, they are the ones who have been blocking the audit of UTL. These Mafias are not jokers. Go and ask Abiriga. I will die with my mouth open, I will die while shouting the mafias are coming until they take me down. They are tapping my phone, I hear their voices when I pick up my phone,” she told journalists last Monday.
Anite’s death threat statements sparked mixed reactions which led to a demonstration by Arua park vendors who come from her home district in Koboko.
Clerics in Koboko also prayed for her and this forced the CID to summon the Minister last Friday to record a statement.
Addressing journalists today August 26, 2019, the Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said they recorded a comprehensive statement from Anite and Police has started investigating the sources of death threats.
“Our team is currently pursuing several lines of inquiry to help approve or disapprove the claim of alleged death threats to her life by the perpetrators whom she mentioned,” said Enanga.
“The public must know that as Police we take all forms of death threats seriously and we are prepared to expeditiously investigate this matter,” he added.
The police mouthpiece further stated that currently there is nobody arrested however Anite’s security has been doubled.
According to Police, all the characters that Anite accuses will be summoned at a later stage of investigation to record statements.
As apart of the investigation Anite’s cell phones will be analysed by the ICT department to see who were the people tapping them especially when she made calls.
