The National Coordinator of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) Gen. Mugisha Muntu had said Uganda’s moral values have been destroyed at the expense of commercial gains.
Gen. Muntu, who was speaking at the funeral service of George Luigi Candia at Our Lady Help of the Sick, Mulago said money and poverty have become weapons used by heartless people to wash away the country’s morals for their personal goals.
The late Candia owned Pacific Hotel in Arua
“The country’s dignity is fashioned by the common morals in the society. Uganda has been a country with morals but greed and poverty have birthed moral decay in all societies. Unfortunately, Ugandans are the ones destroying Uganda,” he said on Tuesday.
“In such tough moments we are living in, there is always a way out. You can choose to save your skin or even sale your friends since you will be enumerated. Corruption scandals are on the increase and culprits are going free. Such practices have eroded away our beauty of Uganda’s morals.”
Meanwhile, Muntu praised Candia for the outstanding honesty he showed when his hotel was raided by Uganda People Defence Force (UPDF) commandos acting on reports that it was harbouring opposition politicians ahead of a by-election in August 2018.
“He stood his grounds and refuted all allegations that were brought by security officers indicating that opposition members who had booked his hotel had guns. This was a tough moment for him but he chose to maintain the morals of his land and spoke the truth without fearing what will come after. It’s too bad that such people are dying,” he added.
Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi, who was among those arrested ion the swoop on that fateful day, also praised Candia for being honest.
“Personally I lost a person that saved my life. A person who refused to sell me out even when he didn’t know me,” he said.
Candia is too buried on Wednesday in Aria village, Arua District.
