The ministry of health has condemned the destruction of two Ebola treatment centers in Kasese.
The centres at Maliba-Abiri and Masango – major entry points from DR Congo – were burnt down by an angry mob, on Wednesday.
It is understood that a 19-year old boy from Democratic Republic of Congo was screened with high temperature and immediately rushed to Bwera Hospital.
However, his relatives retaliated by attacking the teams at the screening points, saying they were giving wrong diagnosis. They also hurled insults at the teams in protest of the referral.
According to Sylvester Baghene, the angry relatives could have returned and destroyed the facilities.
On Thursday, Sarah Opendi, the State Minister of Health for General Duties said the incident was very ‘unfortunate’.
“People from DR Congo have failed to understand that Ebola is a real disease,” she said. “It can spread from one person to another and it’s through screening that we can try and contain it.”
An Ebola Outbreak was declared in Kasese District on June 11, 2019, by the Ministry of Health after three cases were confirmed in the area.
