Over 100 women facing infertility challenges have been lined up to receive In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) services at the newly opened Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital.
Under IVF, eggs of an infertile woman are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilised by a sperm in a laboratory. They are then implanted in the woman’s uterus. IVF may also involve eggs, sperms or embryos from a known or anonymous donor.
Speaking to New Vision newspaper on Friday, Dr Jolly Nankunda, the Hospital’s acting Deputy Director said women who will be getting the services have already undergone thorough investigations to ascertain the cause of their infertility.
“People should know that when they come with the problem of infertility, we do not just rush them to theatre. Many investigations have to be done, to determine the cause of the problem,” Dr Nankunda told the local daily.
Currently, the Hospital charges Shs13 million for the service.
Dr Nankunda also revealed that works at the hospital premises, where the IVF services will take place, are in final stages with eight specialists already enrolled to manage the patients.
“I am optimistic that when IVF is operationalised , not later than this year, more women from the neigbouring countries will seek the service at Mulago.
“IVF procedures are delicate and the environment has to be made in a delicate manner. When the contractors completed the construction of the facility, the users observed that there was need to make a few adjustments to ensure the safety of the whole process. So, this place had to be worked on and finalized. The equipment has to be installed lat, after all other areas are completed,” she said.
