Despite hundreds of cameras on Kampala streets and armed local defense unit personnel, armed robberies on Tuesday morning attacked and killed two mobile money agents, walking away with millions in cash.
The incident took place in Zzana on Entebbe Road, in Wakiso district.
This is the 8th armed robbery, according to police records, in a span of one month and two weeks. Two weeks ago, armed robbers raided and shot dead three people and injured three at Cheap General Hardware in Nansana town in Wakiso. Despite the installation of CCTV cameras, no suspect was apprehended until Inspector General of Police Martins Okoth Ochola revealed that a lorry obstructed cameras from capturing the incident.
In Zzana on Tuesday morning, eye witnesses say five robbers armed with AK-47 guns riding on motorcycles without number plates, attacked and killed mobile money operators identified as Harriet Nalwadda ,35, and Maureen Nakabuubi,25, both residents of Zzana.
Security strategy
Last September, President Museveni, issued a 10-point security strategy of combating crime in the country, ordering installations of CCTV cameras, introduce electronic vehicle number plates, give police officers radio calls and drones and deploy 24,000 Local Defence Unit personnel to police Kampala.
So far 6000 LDUs have been trained and deployed in the city centre to conduct patrols to check criminals.
Government has so far spent at least Shs560 billion on installation of CCTV cameras in Kampala and neighbouring areas and deployed thousands of LDUs but armed criminals have continued to terrorise Kampala and its outskirts uninterrupted.
