President Yoweri Museveni has picked Maj Gen James Birungi as the new commander of the elite Special Forces Command (SFC).
Maj Gen Birungi has been the Uganda People’s Defence Air Force (UPDAF) chief of Staff. He replaces Maj Gen Don Nabasa who is going for a strategic course at the National Defence College.
Brig. Richard Karemire, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces spokesperson said, “the move was part of UPDf’s professionalization through training and adding more knowledge.”
Maj Gen Birungi, the incoming SFC Commander has been with Airforce and should be taking up a more sensitive assignment of protecting the head of state and other leaders and installation with very strategic interests to Uganda.
Maj Gen Nabasa was appointed to head SFC, in January 2017 after he replaced First Son Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who was appointed Senior Presidential Adviser on military affairs.
