Two Ugandan teachers have been shot and killed by South Sudan militia.
The shooting to death of Willis Herbert Binsiima and another Ugandan, Charles Kule happened in Apet, Western Lake State in what has been termed as revenge killing.
Both were teachers at Hope and Resurrection Secondary School, Atiaba and former old boys of Mbarara High School and Nganwa High School respectively. They were in the company of a local head teacher of the school, who was spared.
According to sources, on Saturday, a car belonging to foreigners knocked down the Executive Chief of the Aliab section at Apet.
The car, Watchdog Uganda has learnt, belongs to a Kenyan who is in police custody.
“Since they could not trace the vehicle, a group of Dinkas stood by the on road waiting for any car with a foreign plates,” the source told Watchdog Uganda.
Unfortunately, a vehicle belonging to Hope and Resurrection Secondary school, Atiaba was the first to be sighted.
“The unknown gunmen then opened fire at the Land Cruiser, killing the driver – Kule as well as Ninsiima,” the source said.
The bodies were then taken to Diocese of Rumbek.
The murder was condemned by the locals.
Awut Mayom Agok, a fellow teacher posted: “Charles Kule and Binsiima Willis died horeoes in South Sudan fulfilling their mission of educating the future leaders of South Sudan. They sacrificed their lives for the brighter future of Young South Sudanese. To my students who are reacting to this situation, your reaction and anger is justified but let us give our government a chance to exercise their duty to bring the culprits into books. These perpetrators must face justice and I will see it happened. To the Ugandan community all over, we have all lost our moving libraries, your sons did not die doing their own things but serving Humanity.”
Another local known as Malou Mabor Matot added: “It indeed a very sad tragedy moment. We the teachers in South Sudan have condemned the act of attacking and murdering teachers who are the providers of knowledge.”
This was not the first time in Western Lake State that teachers have been murdered innocently.
“It happened some years back when a candidate student was suspended and told to appear from home to do exams. He, however, brought the gun to the school and shoot teachers, killing some and wounded others,” Malou Mabor Matot said.
Binsiima leaves behind four children.
A vigil, scheduled for Monday, May 27 at 6pm as well as preparations for the burial will be held at the residence of a friend, Herbert Kwikiriza just after Trinity College Nabingo
