President Museveni’s poverty reduction brainchild code-named The Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP) has been given a new five-year lease of life to enable youths continue fighting poverty.
YLP was inaugurated in 2014 on a five-year arrangement, and was due to expire this year when Parliament and Cabinet gave it a new lease.
This has been disclosed by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development Pius Bigirimana while handing over 65 motorcycles and computers to districts under YLP and Uganda Women’s Entreprenuership Programme (UWEP).
Beneficiaries included youth chairmen in municipalities, those in newly created districts, UWEP and YLP focal persons in those units and in Kampala Capital City Authority.
Addressing the gathering at Kireka Rehabilitation Centre, Bigirimana thanked M/S Simba Automotive Ltd, the local manufacturers of the motor bikes, for responding to the presidential call to Ugandans to build Uganda by buying Ugandan goods.
The National Youth Council chairperson Ms Aber Lillian implored beneficiaries to use the facilities to mobilise youth to pay back loans in time to give an opportunity to as many Ugandan youths as possible to benefit from the arrangement.
The Managing Director of Simba Automotive, Paresh Shukra said his company is proud to be the first motorcycle manufacturer in the country, and in the process saving the country from spending in buying imported ones.
“This is a good step towards supporting President Museveni’s BUBU (Buy-Ugandan-Build-Uganda) call,” Shukra said.
