Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda has praised Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine for having the best political strategy ahead of the 2021 general elections.
Mwenda made the remarks while commenting about the poll released last week by Research World International that placed Dr Kizza Besigye behind President Yoweri Museveni and Bobi Wine.
The poll showed that Museveni would score 32 per cent, followed by Bobi Wine with 22 per cent and Besigye with 13 percent.
Bobi Wine only joined active politics less than three years ago while Besigye and Museveni have been directly battling it out since 2001.
“This Kyagulanyi I think has the best political strategy I have seen . Kyagulanyi urges that Museveni can be defeated, people should register and vote and I think because of that he can easily motivate people to show up. The question for Kyagulanyi would be, can he hit into Museveni’s base or can he attract voter turn up to hit 80 or 85 per cent. If so am very sure Museveni cannot win an election,” said Mwenda.
“Museveni in this poll has 32 per cent of Ugandans who say they are likely to vote, in fact this is likely to be the poll of Ugandans generally not those who are likely to vote even though they responded that way. That is Museveni’s level of support countrywide. 32 per cent is a base and what Museveni needs to do is in the campaign to add on five per cent and then the rigging process gives him another five per cent and that 40 per cent. He always wins with 40 per cent of the registered voters. You should always know that Museveni has a small margin of support in Uganda. He wins because of low voters’ turn-up.”
The political analyst however accused Besigye of being Museveni’s strong campaigning manager. He said the four time presidential candidate has always told people that elections do not matter, an idea that works perfectly for Museveni.
“Why there’s low voter turn-up in Uganda I think one of the major reasons is that Museveni has a strong campaigning manager, a man with great credibility whom Ugandans who hate Museveni believe. He is called Dr Kizza Besigye. He tells them elections don’t matter. You saw it in the poll, people said they will not vote because they don’t trust the election process. What Museveni needs is Besigye to keep campaigning that elections get rigged, then Ugandans will say even if they vote it will not matter.”
