Women Staff in Parliament have donated an assortment of items to the Bududa landslide victims who lost their property in October last year.
Over 12,000 people were affected by floods and landslides in Bukalasi and Buwali sub-counties in Bududa district following three days of rainfall in the areas around Mount Elgon National Park.
The Clerk to Parliament and Patron of the Women Staff Jane Kibirige said that this was just the beginning of a long term association with the Uganda Red Cross.
“This gesture is just the beginning of a partnership in helping those in need as a part of our Corporate Social Responsibility. Please do accept this small token but next time it will be more than this,” she said.
The Chairperson of the Forum, Helen Kawesa, said that the forum was compelled to help the victims who lost most of their property during the landslides.
“As the Women Staff in Parliament, we decided to get different items that would help the victims who lost everything. Some men did join in the drive and contributed a number of items for those who lost their property,” she said.
The Secretary General, Uganda Red Cross Society, Robert Kwesiga was grateful for the gesture by Parliament staff.
“Thank you for this noble gesture in support of fellow Ugandans in Bududa who were affected by the mudslides last year. As Red Cross, we are trying to promote Ugandans being there for fellow Ugandans affected by these kinds of emergencies. Iam sure these items will help them a great deal because they lost everything,” he said.
Among the items that were donated were clothes, shoes, soap, bed sheets, duvets, duvet covers and food.
