Justice Catherine Bamugemereire, the Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry into Land Matters has been dragged to court for allegedly causing an illegal arrest of suspects.
Bamugemereire has been sued along with the team she works with on the commission.
Four people including Annette Natukunda, Irene Akiteng, Immaculate Ayebazibwe, and Elly Ampurire claim that the commission acted outside its mandate and power when it caused their arrest and detention without trial.
The particulars of the suit state that on March 12 this year, three of the petitioners, while at their place of work at Masoli, were invaded by a one Gumiziriza who immediately seized their telephone handsets and ordered them to sit down.
“The 8th defendant [Gumiziriza] immediately started searching everywhere in the company premises for almost an hour and later asked the three petitioners the whereabouts of Ruta Ngambwa,” the petitioners allege.
Ngambwa is a businessman who was dragged to the land probe by the family of late Joseph Kateregga, accusing him of taking more than 235 acres of their land.
The plaintiffs allege they were driven to Buwate at the residence of Natukunda, who was asked about the whereabouts of her husband Ngambwa yet he had not been at home for two days.
Natukunda says her pleas to be allowed to first collect her children from school were ignored and she was bundled onto a vehicle and driven off.
The suit was filed before the High Court in Kampala last Friday.
