Buganda Province showed intent to defend the FUFA Drum trophy after winning their opening match against Lango.
The tournamnent’s second season kicked off for its second edition over the weekend.
Last season’s Most Valuable Player, Vianney Ssekajjugo inspired Buganda to a slender 1-0 win over Lango. However Lango head coach David Obua walked away with optimism as his team put on a superb performance but were let down by poor finishing.
Ninenteen goals were scored overall, with Ankole’s 3-2 victory over Sebei at Ntungamo’s Kyamate Stadium producing the highest score. Kato Umar, Muhamad Matovu and Farook Nsereko were on target for the visitors while Nasur Chemutai and Brian Odong scored for Sebei.
At the Kyabazinga Stadium, Jinja hosts Busoga and Tooro shared spoils in another intense match up. Ibrahim Mugulisi put hosts Busoga in the lead before Kirinya Jinja SS defender Isaac Isinde unfortunately put the ball in his own net.
Bar Okoro Stadium in Zombo was stunned as last season’s runners up West Nile surprisingly lost at home to Bunyoro 1-2. Another shock was witnessed in Luzira as hosts Kampala fell to Rwenzori 1-0 thanks to a Mihinizi Mbusa’s early goal for the visitors.
Emmanuel Oten scored the lone goal as Bugisu made easy their chances of progressing to the knock out phase with a narrow 1-0 win over Kigezi at the Mbale Municipal stadium.
Two goals in the opening 45 minutes from Vipers’ forward Tito Okello and Wakiso Giant’s Norman Ojik were enough to steer Acholi to a 2-0 win over neighbours Karamoja at a full to capacity Pece Stadium, while Bukedi condemned Tooro to a 3-1 loss at the Booma plays ground in Butaleja.
The tournament seems to have hit its target of bringing football closer to the crowds in the regions as the matches attracted large crowds at every game.
