Will the Hima Heathens wrap up the Uganda Rugby Premiership title on Saturday with a win against the Dusupay Warriors? Or will the Betway Kobs spoil the champagne party? These are the questions on the minds of rugby fans across the country.
Three points separate the Ugandan rugby giants with Heathens currently at the summit of the log. Kobs follow second but should the warriors upset Heathens, Kobs will pop the champagne.
However, Kobs will be kicking themselves for losing their advantage in the title chase after suffering only their second loss of the season against Pirates, a fortnight ago, letting the Heathens open up a lead with a win against the Jinja-based Walukuba.
Warriors started off the season with stellar performances, but found themselves licking wounds with a couple of losses denting their hopes. This is their highest positioning since their inception in the Uganda Rugby Premiership. But a win against the Heathens will see them walk with bragging rights and a debt to the the latter’s title challenge.
If Heathens go on to lift the trophy however, they will be surely deserved champions as they have been the most efficient side in the league conceding the least number of points this season a true testimony of their defensive organisation and discipline despite being written off by many at the start of the season.
Title challengers Kobs play host to the Shell Rhinos and they will be disappointed that the race is not in their hands but they will keep playing till the final whistle as anything is still possible.
Both teams will be without some of their stand out performers who feature for the national rugby 7’s side. Talisman Micheal Wokorach will be missed by the Heathens while the Kobs are likely to miss the services of Joseph Aredo, Justin Kimono, Adrian Kasito, James Ijongat and Ian Munyani
Elsewhere, despite sitting third on the log, the Pirates have been by far the stand out performers this season after scoring the highest number of points – 514 points with the chance of going past the 70 point mark on the log if they can win against the Rams.
