Kyambogo University student has lost a hand during a protest against the institution’s new tuition payment policy.
The victim, only identified as Abraham, a student pursuing a Diploma in Automotive and Power Engineering lost hand after attempting to grab and throw a tear gas canister back at the police officers who were trying to repress the strike on Thursday.
According to online news site campusbee.ug, the canister exploded in his right hand and raptured the fingers.
Fellow students and other available medical personnel came to his aid after noticing that he was losing a lot of blood. He was put onto a motorcycle and taken to the students’ medical centre for further aid.
The new policy demands payment of tuition and other functional fees within the first 12 weeks of the Semester. Those who fail to pay will automatically be deregistered and given a dead semester.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the student’s timing to throw back the canister was ‘inappropriate”.
‘The student whose hand was injured, tried to throw back a tear gas canister to police and the timing wasn’t perfect, it burst in his hand,’ he said.
